About the classical scales in this free video guitar lesson
HI, I'm Rowan Casey, and in this free video guitar lesson, I will be teaching you how to play the seven classical scales on the guitar. There are seven classical scales, and they are based on the notes with no sharps or flats, or the white keys of the piano.
The A minor scale is perhaps the most popular classical scale on the guitar, and it's a good place to start. The A minor classical scale is ABCDEFGA, and if you start playing the same notes in the A minor scale, with a different root note, (in the A minor scale), you get the seven classical scales.
For example, A minor is the same notes as C major. They are also the same notes as E Phrygian, and G Mixolidian classical scale. By playing the A minor scale either with a different chord behind it, or starting from a different note in the A minor scale, you get the seven different classical scales on guitar.
Let's say you wanted to transpose one classical scale higher or lower on the guitar, simple. You just need to figure out what classical scale you want to play, and find the minor scale shape that fits, (take a look at the free video guitar lesson).
For example, to play an E Mixolydian scale, you would have to play the F sharp minor scale, because the minor scale two frets up from the root note makes a Mixolydian scale. To play all of the different classical scales in the key of E, you just find all of the minor scales which have an E in them. I think the notes that the minor scales start from, are based on the Mixolydian scale, which is obviously one of the classical scales.
Watch the video guitar lesson, and I think you will see what I mean about using the minor shape to play all of the seven classical scales. - Free Video Guitar Lessons: Tapping
Tapping, as I explain in the free video guitar lesson above, is the art of playing notes with just the right hand on the guitar. Usually you would use your index finger to push down notes on the frets, but I...
